Today, I visited Joigny, where Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat was born and grew up. I have long wanted to see her home ever since I had first learned about her four years ago. The sisters there were very kind, and as they showed us around, the house looked just like what I had imagined. I was surprised when my teacher and a sister took me to the backyard, which I had seen on the cover of a Japanese book called “The Life of Saint Madeleine Sophie”. I know that if I look at that book in the future, it will bring back nostalgic memories of the special time I spent there.

We went to Joigny, the place I was most excited to visit. Joigny is very different from Paris—the buildings, houses, and atmosphere looked restful. I loved it so much that I wanted to stay longer. As we walked around Joigny and visited Sophie’s house, we listened to stories about her life. At the vineyard, I even touched real grapes and leaves for the first time, which was really exciting. The vineyard was beautiful, and looking at the scenery helped me relax and feel peaceful. It felt like I could talk to Sophie today. I also learned things about her that we don’t get to hear in class.

This is my first time visiting SBC. I felt as if I lived with Sophie because the house where she was born enabled me to imagine how she grew up. I was impressed to hear the lecture by Sr Agnieszka. What she told our students was just what we wanted our students to have in their mind. Also, I want to remind myself of her lessons, especially when I am in trouble.

This is the fourth time for me. I feel very close to Sophie since I first visited the Center with other teachers in my first year of teaching. Visiting the center is the most important part of the program for our students, too. Anyone who visits here can imagine the scene of little Sophie running up the stairs, studying and praying !
The Center is a special place for everyone to meet Sophie beyond time.
